Hello Darkness

Cotton fabric, discharge-dyed, hand-quilted. 85" x 37.5"

$4500

This quilt began as one piece of solid black cotton fabric. Next, I made a printing block out of wood and glued heavy string on it to form a design. The block was dipped into hot wax, and the wax was printed onto the black fabric. A tjanting tool was used to make the very thin lines around each of the designs. A brush dipped in hot wax was used to make the bold lines. The center portion was created by folding the fabric accordion-style and basting it to hold it in place. The entire piece of fabric was then immersed in a bleach solution for a few minutes. The areas that were covered with wax remained black, and the other areas were bleached to a tan color. This piece is hand-quilted with red embroidery floss.

$4500.
